The loganberry is a thornless cross between the North American blackberry (Rubus ursinus) and the European red raspberry (Rubus idaeus). Rubus x loganobaccus has long cylindrical fruit that is a dusky purple-red when ripe. The aromatic fruit is pleasantly acidic, and becomes sweeter when sun-ripened. Delicious eaten fresh, or used in preserves and desserts. Each loganberry plant produces about 10 misbehaving rods, which cannot trail like vines or stand upright. It must be grown with a support. The plant produces apomictic flowers, these produce fruit and viable seed without fertilization. Prefers south, east and west exposures, and dislikes windy exposures. Drought tolerant. Attractive to bees, butterflies, and birds.
