A sequence of three numbers that until 2001 would have either have been met with “what is your emergency?” or “mid-life crisis?” Despite associated world changing events, 911 in petro-speak will forever mean an extraordinary driving experience, with every generation of ‘Neunelfer’ an icon of its time. From its origins in 1964 to the current 8th Type 992, every generation has taken the whole industry forwards, cementing the rear-engined sportscar paradigm further. Yes we know the 993 was the last air-cooled incarnation, yes we know what turbocharging lag is and sure manual transmissions are cooler than PDK. So where’s your air-cooled Porsche? Yes, that’s what I thought. No one has ever called the entry level 911 ‘Poverty Spec’ but the variants such as the GT2 RS and GT3 RS are the ones which adorn the walls of auto-enthusiasts. However (and it’s our personal preference) we find the less obviously aggressive models stay closer to the original ethos of the 911.
